Noble Latura, 13, from Queen Elizabeth’s School Barnet, is worried about his future. He wants the UK government to make the economy its priority — and soon.
As the UK copes with a growing cost-of-living crisis, many scroll past the email about an unworldly hike in the water bill. Perhaps we are too distracted by everyday life to fully realise and take action upon the financial strains piling up around us. We accept the miserable implications and move on, bracing ourselves for a bumpy road of further price rises ahead.
Are we not all groaning in disgust as every bill adds more to our workload and breaks our backs? Do we not care that we are drowning, unable to lift our head clear of the angry, murderous waves? Despite our annoyance, the citizens and readers of this article are unable to take any meaningful course of action.
The cost of livingThe money that someone needs to afford basic food, housing and clothes. crisis has deep roots. The country can’t be blamed for falling to its knees in the face of this monster. Many factors and bills have caused such an upheaval, such as Brexit and Trump’s tariffs. Those supporting Brexit argued for growth in the economy, along with better border security and trading power. Amenities were also promised to be upgraded for all. And yet, as we face struggles of Trump’s ‘bullying’ tariffs, our departure from the EU seems to show its true nature. As we need our alliances more than ever, we can now truly feel the immeasurable impact of Brexit. Our world falls apart due to Brexit and tariffs. This country’s economy has been further hindered with the numerous wars taking place across the globe. One may be proud to hear how the UK has donated generous support to Ukraine. Domestic problems remain unaddressed.
Many young children and budding citizens of this country often dream of a wondrous life following education; a stable salary, a placid pet, a calm and joyful life ahead. Yet now, the reality of this world shreds these dreams into wisps of the past, as one wonders what struggles we will face.
Life in the UK is not easy for many from an economic point of view. It will take decades to fix the mistakes of a few, which have brought this mighty country to its knees. Some aspects are beyond the government’s control, yet the response to issues affecting our land should certainly be the top priority for our leaders.
Rising bills, closures of corner shops and other changes are small, yet close to our hearts. It is these changes which tear our country apart. As the crisis evolves, we must move away from personal annoyance, and instead, we should shout our opinions loud and clear until it reaches our leaders. As the “Great” Britain and “United” Kingdom, we can’t let the soul of this country be snatched away after all the effort we’ve put into raising it. Let’s stand, as one, as the UK, to fight against the problems and work to create the solutions.
