2024/25 entry pack
Includes submission information, guidelines and top tips!
-
What is Student Voices?
A space for students from The Day member schools to share their opinions and tell stories that they care about.
-
Can I take part?
If your school or college is a member of The Day or a BrainWaves research school, you can take part in Student Voices. You can be any age under 19 and from anywhere in the world.
-
Are there any guidelines?
Submissions must either be written articles between 250 and 500 words long or videos between one to two minutes. They must be your own work and not published in any other publications (other than school publications). Your school or educational institution must be a member of The Day.
-
What can I write about?
You can write about anything that inspires you. Is there something you feel passionate about? Did you have a strong response to an article you read in The Day? Do you disagree with any of your friends, parents or teachers? Have you had an unusual experience? Is there a story you think the media is not telling? All of these things could make for a good article. Make sure you include your opinion! This is what Student Voices is all about.
-
How do I submit to Student Voices?
Download the submission form below (make sure you choose the right one for your age!). Once you have filled it in, you can email it to us at editorial@theday.co.uk alongside a PDF or Google doc of your written article, or a link to your unlisted YouTube video.
-
Will my article definitely be published?
Only submissions that meet our editorial standards will be published — but if we don’t publish your submission, we will send you feedback on how to improve it. The best way to maximise your chances of publication is to read and watch our submission advice below. You should also make sure your chosen topic is as original as possible.
-
What has happened to the Global Young Journalist Awards?
They still exist! But this year, the competition looks a little different. The way to enter is by taking part in Student Voices. If your work is published, it will automatically be entered into GYJA 2025. Winners will be chosen at the end of the school year in July 2025.
-
Are there any prizes?
Yes! Every published piece will be submitted to our yearly Global Young Journalist Awards. So watch this space for Summer 2025!
-
Can a whole class take part?
Yes, a whole class can submit articles to Student Voices. If a whole class send in entries, we will normally send feedback via your teacher and select a small number of entries to publish. If we receive a large number of entries in one go, it may take up to a week to provide feedback!
