Revolutionary! A gap year after GCSEs

Transformational: Gerry Jeffers, a semi-retired researcher and lecturer who was a driving force behind Ireland's transition year in the 1990s, said the idea was to allow children to “take a break from the treadmill". Many learn useful practical skills and see their future through new eyes.

Should all schools introduce it? Many Irish schools offer teenagers a year away from study between exams. Some education experts think the rest of the world should take note.
