George Mallory - An English mountaineer who attempted to be the first to scale Mount Everest in 1924, alongside Andrew Irvine. Both died during the attempt, although their bodies were not found until 1999. It is not known whether they reached the summit before their deaths.
Mount Everest - The world's tallest mountain, which straddles the borders of Nepal and China. Temperatures can drop to -60C. The first known people to climb the mountain were New Zealand's Edmund Hillary and the Sherpa, Tenzing Norgay.
Triathlon - A sporting event consisting of three separate contests, usually swimming, cycling and running. The word derives from the Greek words for "three", treis, and "competition", athlos.
Epic of Gilgamesh - A heroic saga written in ancient Mesopotamia, over 3,000 years ago.
Demigod - A divine mythological figure, a god who is either part human, or a minor god.
Friedrich Nietzsche - A German classical scholar, philosopher, and critic of culture (1844 – 1900), who became one of the most influential of all modern thinkers.
Max Weber - A German thinker of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries who is regarded as one of the founders of sociology. His ideas about the development of modern western society remain highly influential.
Bureaucratic - Involving complicated rules and procedures which can cause long delays.
Apparatuses - A set of equipment or tools or a machine that is used for a particular purpose.
