Defendant - Somebody being accused in court.
Judiciary - The part of a country's government that is responsible for its legal system, including all the judges in the country's courts.
PhD - An abbreviation for a Doctorate of Philosophy. Students study for several years and usually do their own extensive research to gain a PhD.
Tribunal - A body or court set up to decide on disputes.
Genocide - The annihilation of a people, either through killing of its members, or through the suppression of its culture.
Rwanda - A country in the centre of Africa. At least 500,000 people were killed in the appalling genocide of 1994.
Yugoslavia - When the map of Europe was redrawn after World War I, Yugoslavia was created as a monarchy. During the Second World War, communists led by Josip Tito eventually triumphed in struggles between different factions. He kept Yugoslavia united under a constitution modelled on the Soviet Union, and ruled as a dictator until 1980. Yugoslavia collapsed in 1992.
Diplomat - An official representing a country abroad.
