Glossary
Austria - A landlocked country in central Europe. Its official language is German.
Illustrious - Respected and admired for past achievements.
Antifascist - A political movement opposing fascism, the far-right, authoritarian, ultra-nationalist ideology.
Slovene - Also known as Slovenian. The south Slavic language spoken primarily by people living in Slovenia.
Carinthian Slovenians - Also known as Carinthian Slovenes. An indigenous minority group with Slovenian ethnicity who live in the Austrian state of Carinthia, which borders Slovenia. The number of Carinthian Slovenians fell dramatically in the last century, in part due to persecution and the pressure to assimilate.
Persecution - Ill treatment and oppression, especially due to a person's beliefs or race, gender, religion, sexual orientation or other factors.
Yugoslavia - When the map of Europe was redrawn after World War I, Yugoslavia was created as a monarchy. During the Second World War, communists led by Josip Tito eventually triumphed in struggles between different factions. He kept Yugoslavia united under a constitution modelled on the Soviet Union, and ruled as a dictator until 1980. Yugoslavia collapsed in 1992.
Enlightenment - An intellectual movement of the eighteenth Century that ruthlessly criticised religion, traditions and inherited privilege.
Mandarin Chinese - The language spoken by 70% of all Chinese speakers.
Beijing - China’s capital.
Welsh - The language, people, or things related to Wales. Welsh is a Celtic language native to the Welsh people, spoken by about 18% of the Welsh population.
Kenya - A country in East Africa with a population of nearly 54 million people.
