AI is unbiased and can help us to process large amounts of information and data; it might even open up new possibilities such as reading our minds, or enabling us to vacation on Mars, says Avantika Vinayak Singh, 10, from Pathways School Noida, but it needs to be handled with care.
AI is changing the world around us. Some people believe it can make our lives easier by solving problems and saving time. On the other hand, others worry that it can be misused, or create big challenges, like privacy issues.
We use and find AI in our everyday life. From taking inputs in lifts for which floor to go, to tools like chatbots that handle customer queries quickly, saving time for businesses, AI plays a significant role. AI, for example, boosts education, with personalised learning apps such as Duolingo helping students learn at their own pace.
On the other hand, AI creates worry. For an instance, AI can be mishandled, with tools like deep fakes that can spread misinformation and harm reputations. Another considerable problem is that AI can make mistakes. If data given over to machine learning is incomplete or incorrect, it can lead to serious issues. Just as an autonomous car from Uber tragically hit and killed a pedestrian because its AI misidentified her as a false object on the road.
Although AI may be a cause of worry or a matter of concern, one cannot ignore the help AI provides in advancing healthcare. For example, scientists at Cambridge University have developed an AI tool that predicts if and when individuals at risk will develop Alzheimer’s disease, achieving 80% accuracy. Also, AI solves complex problems, and models have been developed to predict natural disasters, helping in disaster preparedness.
Even so, AI still has a lot of issues in the human world. It can lead to job losses: automation replaces human workers in industries like manufacturing. According to Time magazine, millions of Americans lost jobs in the pandemic, and robots and AI are replacing humans in the workplace faster than ever.
Despite this, the fact will always remain that AI lacks human emotions. It seems impossible at the moment for machines to provide empathy or be sentient.
I think we should allow AI to handle technical work, to do the tasks that take lots of time or need lots of information, and help us out in tough times. In the meantime, we can manage the “Humans Only” department, because it is important to keep control of the things that need creativity or feelings. This, after all, is how we learn and grow.
