The Gaza conflict

On the morning of Saturday 7 October, Israelis awoke to a brutal attack. Rockets launched into cities. Hundreds of people were killed by men with guns at a music festival. More people were taken as hostages. The attackers were from Hamas, a Palestinian militant group, and they had come from the Gaza Strip — a tiny area of land home to millions of Palestinians. In response, Israel has declared a war and a "full siege" of Gaza, cutting off electricity and its water and food supplies.
