What does the world picture when they think of South America? The majestic peaks of the Andes mountains? The vibrant jungle of the Amazon rainforest? The ancient ruins of Machu Picchu? Or the bustling streets of Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro? South America is a continent of many parts. It is home to some of the most awe-inspiring nature on Planet Earth and also a diverse population of more than 400 million people. It has been inhabited by humans for at least 14,500 years — but in the last decades, more and more people are noticing the impact of that human activity. Today, a battle is underway over the future of one of the continent's greatest jewels: the Amazon. Experts warn that its unique ecosystem and indigenous populations are in serious danger as acres and acres of rainforest are felled. And those trying to save it do not go unopposed.
