Donald Trump - An American politician, media personality, and businessman serving as the 47th president of the United States since January 2025. A member of the Republican Party, he previously served as the 45th president from 2017 to 2021.
Volodymyr Zelensky - Zelensky won more than 73% of the vote to become Ukrainian President in April 2019. Incredibly, he once starred in a satirical drama in which his character accidentally wins the Ukrainian presidency.
Ukraine - A country in Eastern Europe. It was invaded by Russia in February 2022.
Vice president - In the USA, the vice president can take over from the president if they are unable to run the country.
Russia - The largest country in the world by area. It has a population of 144 million people.
Invaded - When an army enters a country or place to take it over.
White House - The official residence of the US president, in Washington DC. Burnt by British troops in 1814, it was rebuilt and painted white to hide the smoke stains.
Vladimir Putin - Russia’s ruler since 2000. He is a strong opponent of the West.
Dictator - A ruler who has total power, and has often taken power by force.
Democracies - Countries which have a system of government based on the idea of rule by the people.
Nato - The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation was founded in 1949 to unite Western democracies in Europe and North America against the perceived growing threat of the USSR. It now has 31 members.
Elections - When a vote is held to decide who should represent a group of people.
