Glossary
Gaza - The smaller of two Palestinian territories, home to two million people. It is located on the Mediterranean coast, bordered by Israel and Egypt.
Israel - A country in the Middle East, and the only Jewish nation in the modern period. It is seen by Jews, Christians and Muslims as the Holy Land.
Humanitarian - People or views that advocate for human welfare
Palestinian - Palestine is an area of the eastern Mediterranean region, including the West Bank, Gaza Strip and parts of modern Israel. It has been fought over by Arab and Jewish national movements for many years.
Hamas - A militant Palestinian organisation, which has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2007. It is listed as a terrorist organisation in the UK.
Donald Trump - An American politician, media personality, and businessman serving as the 47th president of the United States since January 2025. A member of the Republican Party, he previously served as the 45th president from 2017 to 2021.
Human rights - The basic rights and freedoms that belong to every person in the world, from birth until death. They apply regardless of where you are from, what you believe or how you choose to live your life. Some have called for animals and even natural phenomena like rivers to have some form of human rights.
Concentration camp - A large prison for people held without legal justification, such as political prisoners or persecuted minorities. The first concentration camps were built by British colonial rulers in South Africa, but the term is most associated with Nazi camps, some of which were used to execute Jewish and other inmates as well as to imprison them.
Ethnic cleansing - The systematic forced removal from one area or killing of an ethnic group, with the aim of creating a region that is ethnically homogeneous.
Ceasefire - An end to fighting — often temporary.
Civil wars - Wars between people from the same country.
Northern Ireland - A small part of the island of Ireland that is one of the four nations of the UK. Northern Ireland has had a troubled history because of divisions between Protestants, who mostly identify with the UK, and Catholics, who would like to be part of the Republic of Ireland.
Yugoslavia - When the map of Europe was redrawn after World War I, Yugoslavia was created as a monarchy. During the Second World War, communists led by Josip Tito eventually triumphed in struggles between different factions. He kept Yugoslavia united under a constitution modelled on the Soviet Union, and ruled as a dictator until 1980. Yugoslavia collapsed in 1992.
