Senate - The upper chamber of the Congress that - along with the US House of Representatives (lower chamber) - comprises the legislative branch of the US government. Each of the 50 US states is equally represented by two senators, regardless of its population size.
Legitimacy - When a ruler or institution has the right to lead or rule.
Accountability - Protected by powerful unions and their close working relationships with prosecutors, many feel that US police officers do not have to fear consequences for their actions.
Sanctions - Economic measures designed to punish a country, for instance by excluding it from trade.
Superpower - A state that possesses military or economic might, or both, and general influence vastly superior to that of other states.
Irony - A situation in which the result is opposite to what you might expect.
