North Korea - A country formed in 1945 when Japanese-occupied Korea was split between a Communist government in the north and a capitalist one in the south. Today it is extremely reclusive, and hostile to the West.
South Korea - An East Asian nation on the southern half of the Korean Peninsula, it shares one of the world’s most heavily militarised borders with North Korea. South Korea has a population of about 52 million.
Successor - A person who takes over from someone else, often in a job.
Taboos - Things that are forbidden due to social rules of behaviour.
Authoritarian - Enforcing strict obedience to authority.
Arsenal - Collection of weapons.
Sovereignty - The authority of a state to govern itself, or sometimes another state.
Totalitarian - When a political system or leader requires complete subservience to the state. In a totalitarian system, people are not allowed to express their own opinions.
Autocracy - A society ruled by a single person or group with absolute power.
Patriarchal - A society in which adult men have a monopoly on power. In these societies, men tend to hold all political positions, and women and children are also expected to obey the men in their families.
