Glossary
Estonia - One of the Baltic States. It was taken over by the Soviet Union during World War Two but regained its independence in 1991.
AI - A computer programme that has been designed to think.
Startup - A new business.
Synthetic - An artificial substance or material. It is made by humans using chemical processes, rather than occurring naturally.
Android - A robot that looks like a human being (in science fiction).
Pension - A regular payment made to people who have stopped working due to their age.
Caste - India's version of the class system, where your status in society is rigidly determined by your birth and the caste of your parents. Caste identities are weakening, but are still strong in rural areas and particularly in northern parts of the country. The caste system divides Hindus into four main categories - Brahmins (teachers, priests, intellectuals), Kshatriyas (warriors and rulers), Vaishyas (farmers, traders, merchants) and the Shudras (manual labourers). Then there are the Dalits, or the "untouchables".
Mechanising - Introducing machines into processes.
Luddites - People opposed to new technology; named after bands of English workers in the 19th Century who believed machinery, especially in cotton and wool mills, was threatening their jobs.
Pact - Agreement.
White-collar - Relating to the work done by people in non-manual, office jobs.
allies - An ally is someone that aligns with and supports a cause with another individual or group of people.
