Backsliding - Relapsing into bad ways.
Republican - Somebody who supports the idea of a country having an elected head of state, such as a president, rather than a hereditary king or queen.
Epithet - A nickname that describes something about a person or thing.
Unchecked - No examined or restrained.
Executive orders - In the US, orders written by the president that does not require approval from the legislature, Congress.
Pillars - Foundational supports.
Judicial - Relating to the legal system and to judgments made in a court of law.
Nonpartisan - Unbiased.
Naive - Show lack of experience or judgement.
Left-wing - A range of beliefs that are the opposite of right-wing ideas. People on the political left usually believe in collective responsibility and the good of society. They often, though not always, support higher taxes and a more active, interventionist government.
Orthodoxy - Accepted belief.
Civil service - The civil service helps the government to develop and carry out policies. Civil servants are non-political, remaining in place when political parties enter and leave office.
