Are things only going to get better? A group of social scientists has released a road map for a fairer future. But their ideas might prove impossible to implement.
Experts plan for planet’s happy future
Global hope: A bold new plan aims to tackle climate change and wealth inequality by taxing the rich and changing how we live. Glossary
Armageddon - Another name for the world’s end. It originally described the location of a battle during the Biblical apocalypse.
Planetary Boundaries - A framework that defines environmental limits within which humanity can safely live and thrive. Crossing these boundaries, like worsening climate change or losing too much biodiversity, risks destabilising the Earth's natural systems.
Decarbonise - To reduce the amount of carbon.
Inequality - When money and opportunities are not shared equally between different groups in society.
Overconsumption - Using up something in excess, e.g. resources such as fuel.
Sufficiency - A sustainability concept focused on having "enough." It means consuming just what you need to live well while actively choosing not to waste resources or over-consume.
Deforestation - The removal of a forest in order to use the land on which it stood for some other use, often agriculture or housing.
Fossil fuel - Fossil fuels, including coal, crude oil and natural gas, are made from decomposing plants and other organisms. The non-renewable fuels are burned for energy, emitting carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
Utopian - Impossibly perfect. The term comes from an ancient Greek phrase meaning "no-place" invented by Henry VIII's chancellor, Sir Thomas More, in 1516, as the name of an imaginary, ideal island.
