Why did Iceland’s women go on strike?

Nearly 50 years ago, something extraordinary happened in Iceland. For one day, 90% of the country's women stopped in their tracks. They refused to go to their jobs, work in their homes or look after their children. Life in the country shut down. Flights were cancelled. Men had to take their children to work. It showed the importance of women's work to society — and it changed the fight for gender equality in Iceland forever.
