What is the winter solstice?

Tomorrow marks the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. In London, the sun will not rise until four minutes past eight in the morning. Less than eight hours later, at 3.54pm, it will set again. So, how exactly does a solstice work. This short video the Met Office explains.
