What is the point of pain?

We have all felt pain before. But none of us can exactly put it into words. It is indescribable and inexplicable. We know that pain is a useful way to tell our brains when a stimulus from our environment is a threat to our well-being. But what about the philosophical aspects of pain? What about emotional pain? And why do some people experience chronic pain?
