How can we spot fake AI images?

Generative AI is getting better every day. And while it may be quite easy to tell that a photo of a giraffe wearing a turtleneck jumper may be fake, it is much harder to spot images that have been designed to look like "real life". The consequences could be huge: politicians spotted "taking part" in illegal activities, ordinary people blackmailed for "revealing" photos, or big companies duped by fake CEOs.
