In his shoes, wouldn't you? The outgoing president, at the very last minute, rescued his son from a possible prison sentence. Some fear he has sold the nation to save his family.
What's happening?
On Sunday, outgoing president Joe Biden pardoned his own son, Hunter, who was convicted earlier this year on charges of gun ownership and tax irregularities.
The Bidens have long maintained that these charges were politically motivated, allegedly brought against Hunter to divert attention from the legal problems faced by Donald Trump.
But that has not prevented a wave of criticism, even from Biden supporters.
Critics say his decision to pardon his own son opens the door to wider abuses of power by Trump, who has already said that he will pardon those who participated in the January 2021 riots aimed at overturning the election result.
Hunter Biden's life has been complicated by alcoholismAlcohol addiction. and drug abuse. Yet Joe Biden is devoted to his family, and it is little wonder he wants to spare his son more pain.
He has also dedicated his life to the US political system. So should he betray the country that he has served for more than five decades to avoid seeing his already-broken son put behind bars for the rest of his own life?
In his shoes, wouldn't you?
Yes! How could Joe Biden look himself in the eye if he did not save his son from more misery?
No! History will judge the sentimental weakness of a president who failed in his life's mission.
