Concentration camp - A large prison for people held without legal justification, such as political prisoners or persecuted minorities. The first concentration camps were built by British colonial rulers in South Africa, but the term is most associated with Nazi camps, some of which were used to execute Jewish and other inmates as well as to imprison them.
Roma - A travelling community who are thought to have originated in India.
Sinti - A Central European community who used to be travellers but are now mainly settled.
7 October Attacks - October 7, 2023, Hamas-led militants from the Gaza Strip launched an unprecedented surprise attack on southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and the taking of over 250 hostages.
Zionism - A nationalist movement that emerged in the late 19th century, advocating for the establishment and support of a Jewish homeland in Palestine.
Hanukkah - Also called Chanukah, an eight-day Jewish festival known as the "festival of lights" which usually takes place in December. It is a reminder of a battle against the Greeks over religious freedom more than 2,000 years ago.
