Modest Queen liked old gloves and reused wrap
Should we all be more frugal? The Queen refused to replace her everyday items.
Instead, she repaired old gloves and collected wrapping paper.
In the autumn rain, Queen Elizabeth II is wearing her wellies and digging into the earth. She plants the seeds for a new tree to grow.
When it came to the environment, the Queen was a leader who took action.
According to historian Kate Williams, Elizabeth II walked lightly on the planet. “She was very frugal, and it’s very much about her upbringing as a war baby.” She had a simple
diet, reused wrapping paper for Christmas presents and kept furniture for decades. In a throwaway culture, the Queen stayed true to her frugal principles. She knew the importance
of saving and protecting.
Build the Change Challenge
The Queen encouraged everyone to plant a tree to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee year. In this
challenge, you will design a flourishing forest, full of colour and life.
Step 1: Come up with a design. What features will the forest include? Which animals will live in it? How will its trees survive?
Step 2: Create your forest! You can draw a picture of it or, if you have time, use craft materials and LEGO® bricks to make a real version of your forest environment
