Scott Haraguchi is kayaking near HawaiiSituated in the Pacific Ocean, it was made a US state in 1959 and is the only island state.. The sea is warm and calm. But suddenly - wham! A huge shark crashes into his kayakA type of canoe, propelled by a human with a paddle. . He shouts out, scared. But the shark quickly vanishes.
That was last Friday. But Scott was not the only person to survive a meeting with a shark last week.
A 13-year-old girl called Ella Reed was bitten by a shark in FloridaA coastal state in the south-east of the US, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. Though nicknamed "the sunshine state", it also experiences phenomenal rainstorms..
The shark "was about as big as me," she says. Ella punched the shark, but it came back and bit her on the leg: "It wouldn't leave me alone, so I had to use my arm and use my hand too, so it got my arm and my finger."

Around the world, two people have been killed by sharks this year. In January, a woman and child were killed by a polar bear. And last month a runner was killed by a bear in Italy.
Attacks on humans by wild animals have risen since 1950. Scientists think this is because humans now visit more places where animals exist. There are many more people alive today than in 1950 - so the chances of a dangerous animal coming across a human are higher.
