Yerevan - The capital of Armenia.
Azerbaijan - A former Soviet Republic between the Caspian Sea and Caucasus mountains.
EU - European Union. An economic and political union of 27 countries.
Disinformation - False information intended to mislead, including propaganda, which all too often encourages the spread of misinformation, fake news spread by mistake. It is contrasted with misinformation, which may be spread accidentally.
Syria - A Middle Eastern country that was the site of much of the fighting during the Crusades.
Venezuela - An oil-producing country in South America.
Genocide - The annihilation of a people, either through killing of its members, or through the suppression of its culture.
Ottoman Empire - Also known as the Turkish empire, a huge empire that spanned southeast Europe, West Asia and north Africa from the 14th to early 20th Centuries.
Natural gas - Hydrocarbon-rich gases that are found naturally in the atmosphere. A fossil fuel energy source.
Islamist - An advocate of Islamic fundamentalism. Often used in the West to describe those who believe in imposing Sharia (Islamic law) on societies.
Strait of Hormuz - A narrow stretch of water between Iran, the UAE and Oman. It connects the Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, and is thus a vital global shipping route, with 20% of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas normally passing through the strait.
Sanctions - Economic measures designed to punish a country, for instance by excluding it from trade.
