International Court of Justice - the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, established in 1945, and located in The Hague, Netherlands. It is the only international court that adjudicates general disputes between nations, and gives advisory opinions on international legal issues.
Genocide Convention - An international treaty that defines genocide as acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial, or religious group.
Hamas - A militant Palestinian organisation, which has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2007. It is listed as a terrorist organisation in the UK.
Armenian Genocide - The systematic destruction of the Armenian people and identity in the Ottoman Empire during World War One.
Holodomor - A famine in Ukraine between 1932 and 1933 that killed millions of people. Some describe it as a genocide, arguing that it was deliberately caused or exacerbated by the government of the USSR.
Holocaust - The murder of six million Jewish people in Europe by Nazi Germany. Members of other minority groups were also killed.
Colonial - When a region or country is controlled politically by another.
UN - United Nations. An intergovernmental organisation based in New York that aims to maintain international peace and security.
Ethnic - Relating to a group of people who share a race, nationality or cultural group.
National - Relating to or belonging to a whole country or nation.
Racial - Relating to, based on, or characteristic of race or people of different races.
Religious - Relating to a religion, or belief in God or gods.
Amnesty International - An international non-governmental organisation focused on human rights.
Turkey - Officially the Republic of Türkiye, a country that lies partly in Europe and partly in Asia at the east of the Mediterranean.
Serbia - A country in south-eastern Europe that gained its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1878.
Myanmar - The largest country in mainland south-east Asia, formerly known as Burma. It is an ethnically diverse place, something that has often resulted in fierce conflict.
