Should we bring back National Service?

Between 1949 and 1963, two million young men aged 17 to 21 were called up for 18 months of National Service. Now, Conservative MP Rory Stewart thinks that a compulsory National Citizen Service (NCS) for 16-year-olds could unite the country, and give teenagers a sense of purpose. Rather than military service, the new NCS would see young people spend a month working with people from different backgrounds to give back to the community. Is it a good idea? What do you think?
