Do we have anything to fear? Sirens, bombs, tanks and guns... but, to many, it still seems far away and hardly relevant. Experts, however, predict major changes to all our lives.
This morning, two scenes played out across Europe: i) children sheltered in subway stations as bombs fell near Kyiv, ii) pupils ran for the school bus as life continued as normal in Berlin.
Today, newspapers warned of a new World War in Europe. But for many, the events in Ukraine still do not seem real.
Here are eight ways war in Ukraine could directly affect us all:
1. Deaths. Millions worldwide know and care about family or friends living in Ukraine. A death in Ukraine would affect the whole world.
2. Democracy, sovereignty and rule of law. The idea that a European nation could be invaded by a neighbour in the 21st Century is shocking. The invasion is a challenge to the West's democratic order.
3.Global instability. Most people in the West today have only ever known peace. Our understanding of war comes from books and films. This could soon change.
4. Cyberattacks. The modern world depends on technology. Russian hackers could shut down transport networks, cash points and government websites.
5. Food and energy prices. Russia is a major global supplier of gas and oil. Any disruption could cause energy prices to rise rapidly. And many European countries rely on wheat from Ukraine. If production stops, the price of the food in our supermarkets will rise.
6. Refugees. The West has already taken in thousands of refugees in the last decade. If millions of people flee Ukraine, it will pose a challenge for Western leaders.
7. A new Soviet Union. The USSR was known worldwide for forced labour camps and brutal oppression. Nobody wants to see the return of a repressive regime on the edge of Europe.
8. World War Three. Russian nuclear missiles could reach Berlin in seven minutes. The start of World War Three is unlikely, but not impossible.
Do we have anything to fear?
Yes: The fate of Ukraine is about more than just the future of one country. It affects the peace and stability of the entirety of Europe and beyond. It is clear: war in Ukraine impacts everyone.
No: Ukrainians must worry about bombs. But thousands of miles from the frontline, life will continue largely as normal. It is highly unlikely Western nations will be drawn into direct conflict.
Or... There is no doubt: this war is a tragedy for the people of Ukraine. But unfortunately, fighting is not unusual in the world today. This war is unlikely to affect us more than any other conflict.
