Last month, RussiaThe largest country in the world by area. It has a population of 144 million people. invaded Ukraine. Many people have had to leave their home country. Lots of families are travelling a long way so that they have somewhere safe to stay.
A person who leaves their home country because it is not safe is a refugeePeople who are forced from their countries because war or persecution.. So far, two million people are refugees because of the war.
Lots of countries have said they will help the refugees. PolandA central European state that is the 5th-most populous member state of the EU. has taken in 1.4 million people. Hungary has welcomed over 200,000.
Now, the UK says it will welcome people in need. The governmentThe group of people who govern - or lead - the country. is setting up a new plan. It means that anybody who has a spare room will be able to give it to refugees to use.

This is not the first time the UK has helped people in this way. During World War Two, there were lots of refugees. Many of them were children.
The UK set up a project to rescue children who were in danger. Normal people invited the children to live with them. They gave them food. They took them to school and helped them learn English.
It was called KindertransportGerman for children's transport. During World War Two, individuals and companies sponsored around 10,000 Jewish children to bring them to Britain to save them from the Holocaust. . This is because Kinder means children in German.
Today, lots of people want to help in the same way. Thousands are already signing up.
