How we got to the Moon (and back again)

Tomorrow, it will be 50 years since the Apollo 11 spacecraft launched from Cape Kennedy in Florida to begin its 240,000-mile journey to the Moon. On 20 July 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first people to walk on the Moon. But what happened along the journey?

Activities

  1. Each astronaut carried some personal items in a “Personal Preference Kit” to the Moon and back to Earth. Armstrong’s included some Apollo 11 medallions; gold jewellery (for his wife and mother), and a piece of wood from the Wright brothers’ first successful aeroplane. What small items would you take in your PPK? And which ten songs would you like on your mixtape?
  2. How do you think Armstrong and Aldrin felt as they stepped onto the Moon’s surface for the first time? Write a paragraph imagining their thoughts and feelings.
