Josh Gabbatiss was only nine years old when he started writing a book about animals. More than 20 years later, he has finally finished writing.

Humans love animals. There are 471 million pet dogs worldwide and 372 million pet cats. But people also keep hamsters, rabbits, snakes, fish, lizards and many other creatures.

Now, one writer and historian says it is time to stop. Troy Vettese says we keep pets to make ourselves happy, without thinking about how happy our pets are.

Many people do not have the time or knowledge to care properly for their pets, he says. Pets often lead boring and lonely lives.

Meanwhile, cats kill thousands of birds and small animals every year, harming wildlife.
