Rumita's mask at the Satriano Carnival on February 18, 2023 in Satriano di Lucania. The Carnival of Satriano is an ancient popular festival that takes place on the Saturday and Sunday before Shrove Tuesday, considered the most characteristic, evocative and mysterious of Basilicata. The uniqueness of this carnival rite is given by the presence of three typical masks that parade through the streets of the town: Rumita, Urs and Quaresima. And considered one of the last arboreal and ancestral rites that survived in their entirety. (Photo by Davide Pischettola/NurPhoto via Getty Images)
