It used to be easy to simply walk away and start a new life. You could move to a different town, change your name and unless someone spotted you, nobody would know.
Today, this is practically impossible. The tech companies that run social media sites know all about you. They can track where you are as many as 747 times a day.1
Some, like expert Shoshana Zuboff, think that today, it is impossible to live your life privately, without somebody knowing what you are up to the whole time.

Companies own a huge amount of information about every person. Often, there is so much of it, it is basically impossible to work out what they do and do not know about you.
Some think we need lots of new rules, to stop this from happening. People from outside the companies should be able to see what they are doing - and let others know so they can make choices.
Others point out that in many ways, social media has changed our lives for the better. We can talk to others wherever they are in the world, share our lives, tell stories and find directions all at the click of a button. Privacy, they say, is a small price to pay for these amazing possibilities.

Yes! People need the ability to switch off and choose to be alone. It is completely wrong that this is not really an option today.
No! Big Tech uses the stuff it knows about us to make our lives better. It would be a bad idea to hold Big Tech companies back.
