What's happening?

Britain's leaders have already announced huge cuts to taxes. And yesterday Kwasi Kwarteng, the man in charge of the UK's money, said he wanted to make even more cuts. 

Tax is money paid by people and companies to the country. In most places, the amount someone pays depends on how much money they make. The money is used to pay for things that most people need, like roads and hospitals.

Today, prices are rising fast in the UK. Many people are strugglingFinding something hard or difficult. to pay for things they need. They are trying to spend less.

Kwasi Kwarteng thinks that tax cuts mean people will spend more. They will keep more of the money they earn.

But others say this will not help many people. Many of the tax cuts are for people who already earn a lot of money. They say the poorest people will not have more money to spend. 

But isn't tax a good thing?

Yes! People do not like paying tax, but it is very important. The money is spent on things everyone needs, like roads and bin lorries. 

No! Nobody wants to earn money and then give it to leaders. It would be better if everyone could spend all of their money themselves.
