People on the street stared. Walking past was an amazing person. She was surrounded by men holding umbrellas. She had platinum blonde hair and bold eyelashes. The bright pink train of her dress was 25-feet long.

The Met is one of the world's greatest museums. It has a famous fashion section called the Costume Institute.

Every year, to raise money, the museum throws a big public dinner called a GalaA festive occasion. The word derives from a French verb meaning to rejoice.. Celebrities pay thousands of dollars for tickets. This year, each ticket costs $35,000.

Four celebrities were chosen to help organise the event. The actor Timothee Chalamet, singer Billie Eilish, poet Amanda Gorman and tennis star Naomi Osaka. All of them are under 25.

The Met Gala is famous as one of the most glamourous events in the world. None of the guests are announced in advance. Guests can only buy tickets if they are invited. The only person who can choose who to invite is Anna Wintour. She is editor-in-chief of Vogue.

For people who work in fashion, it is a very important event. But some people say it is wasteful and pointless.

Yes! It is not just pointless and unimportant. It can be dangerous. Following fashions can stop us being creative. Plus, it is bad for the environment. Making clothes uses huge amounts of water. We throw away tonnes of clothing every day. We should not celebrate it.

Others think

No! Fashion is very important. It has inspired designs and even helped create new materials. It does not have to be wasteful. Second-hand fashion is getting more popular. And it is much easier to hire an outfit for a special occasion.
