Is nature adapting to survive the climate crisis? Coral reefs in the Gulf of Aqaba appear to be "content" with rising temperatures. And the newly-discovered reef seems unharmed.
The divers could hardly believe their eyes. In front of them was a beautiful coral reef. "It was like a work of art," said the group's photographer.
The divers were part of a mission to map the sea bed. They found the coral in an unexpected place - 70 metres below the sea near TahitiA large island in French Polynesia. It is near Hawaii. in the Pacific Ocean. Most coral grows in shallow water.
Incredibly, the coral was healthy. It was not damaged by climate change.
For coral experts, good news is rare. Coral reefs are under threat. Rising sea temperatures and pollution can kill coral.
Many reefs are already very damaged. In the next 20 years, scientists predict between 70% and 90% of coral will disappear.
But some coral is surprisingly tough. The Gulf of Aqaba is at the northern end of the Red Sea. The water is warming up, but the coral is still healthy. It is not bleached.
Red Sea corals migrated from the south, where sea temperatures are warmer. Scientists think this is why they can survive in warmer water.
They are hopeful that some species can adapt to survive climate change.
In the Caribbean, lizards have developed longer logs which help them cling onto rocks during bad weather. Other species have evolved larger limbs, ears and beaksThe bill surface area of Australian parrots has increased by 10% since 1871. But not every animal will adapt to climate change. The environment is changing fast. Some species may not adapt quickly enough. They will go extinctA species that no longer has any living members..

Its refugee agency, the UNHCR, aims to assist refugees around the world. says one million species are at risk of extinction due to humans. Some people think we are living in a mass extinction eventSince 1500, Earth could have lost up to 13% of its two million known species. The past five major species die-off events were caused by natural environment changes..
Animals and plants across the planet are under pressure as the climate changes. Many scientists are hopeful they will adapt and survive. If they do not, the world we live in will be a very different place.
<h5><span style="font-weight: 400">Is nature adapting to survive the climate crisis?</span></h5>
Yes: These corals are proof of nature's adaptability. The planet has changed hugely throughout its history. Nature will survive whatever changes are still to come.
No: Climate change is unlike anything the Earth has been through before. Animals cannot adapt quickly enough to survive climate change. This is a crisis point.
Or... We should not use this as an excuse to stop fighting climate change. Some species may adapt to survive. But a future with only the most resilient creatures is a bleak one.
